This Independence Day holiday weekend will see the return of the incoherent yellow creatures known as the Minions to theaters as well as the streaming debut of a Chris Pratt-led action series and a series centered around one of the most memorable characters to have come out of Disney’s modern catalog of animated films.
“Minions: The Rise of Gru” tells the story of how supervillain Gru — voiced by Steve Carell — first crossed paths with the yellow creatures who would eventually become his loyal henchmen. When Gru outsmarts and enrages the infamous supervillain supergroup the Vicious 6, he suddenly finds himself the mortal enemy of the apex of evil. With Gru on the run, the Minions attempt to master the art of kung fu to help save him. The animated adventure is playing exclusively in theaters.
Meanwhile, Chris Pratt stars as a Navy SEAL commander who turns to vengeance as he investigates the mysterious forces behind the murder of his entire platoon in “The Terminal List.” Free from the military’s command structure, he applies the lessons he has learned from nearly two decades of warfare to hunt down the people responsible. The eight-episode action series, which is based on the novel of the same name by Jack Carr, is streaming exclusively on Amazon.
Finally, the affable, inflatable healthcare companion from Disney’s 2014 animated adventure “Big Hero 6” returns in “Baymax,” a series of shorts that see him set off across the fantastical city of San Fransokyo to do what he was programmed to do: help others. Scott Adsit voices the character in the six-episode series, which is streaming exclusively on Disney+.
Whether you spend this weekend in a theater watching “Minions: The Rise of Gru” or at home watching “The Terminal List” or “Baymax,” the fireworks on screens are sure to rival those that will light up the skies.
